Women in MENA Tech: Funding and Growth
Women-led startups in MENA are growing in number and ambition. This piece covers funding trends and how to access capital and community.
Women-led startups in MENA are raising more capital than ever, but the gap versus mixed-gender and male-led teams remains significant. Understanding the landscape—and the levers that work—helps founders and the ecosystem move the needle.
The numbers. A small share of VC funding in MENA goes to women-only founding teams; mixed-gender teams do better but still lag. Bias in pitch feedback, smaller networks, and fewer role models contribute. The good news: dedicated funds, accelerators, and initiatives are growing, and data is improving so we can measure progress. More LPs are asking fund managers about diversity; that pressure is slowly translating into more capital for women-led companies. The trend is positive but slow—founders and allies need to keep pushing.
What works. Preparation and traction matter for everyone; for women founders, building a visible track record and a strong Network can offset some of the network gap. Warm introductions and referrals from other founders and investors open doors. Pitching in inclusive forums—including our Arena—puts you in front of investors who have committed to diverse pipelines. Apply to programmes that explicitly support women founders; the cohort and network effects are valuable. Share your story and metrics when you’re comfortable; visibility helps the next cohort and attracts investor attention.
Investor and ecosystem actions. Funds that set diversity targets, train partners on bias, and broaden their sourcing see better deal flow and returns. Accelerators and communities that spotlight women-led companies help with visibility and follow-on funding. Our Shop and events are part of a community that supports all founders. Ecosystem builders can publish data, run inclusive events, and create safe spaces for feedback. Investors can audit their pipeline and decision-making for bias and broaden their networks to include more women-led companies.
Founder advice. Build your data room and narrative to the same standard as anyone else. Seek out investors and programmes that explicitly back diverse teams. Don’t undersell; ask for what you need to hit the next milestone. The ecosystem is shifting—be part of the wave. Support other women founders: intros, advice, and shared learning raise the tide for everyone.
